The boys started soccer last night. After I got over the shock that I am offically a SOCCER MOM, I settled in with my camera and video camera to watch the show. Luckily, their team actually has a coach who is excited to be there and really wants to help the children. They started with warm-ups and drills.
They got more excited by the end. Jeffrey never quite figured out that you only need to play with one ball at a time. He was happy sitting on the bench holding a soccer ball. Jacob got the hang of it and actually scored two goals. Granted, he picked the ball up and put it in front of the goal so he could kick it, but that's better than nothing. They had a great time and they can't wait until next week!
They are playing at the local YMCA, so every game starts with the Players Creed. The director of the league recites a sportsmanship oath that is too long and uses words that are too big for three year olds. After the creed, the game starts! Only 3 kids from each team play at once. They is a liberal substitution rule. Basically, when you get tired, you go to the bench. If you want to play, you go in. Only about 6 out of the 10 kids actually wanted to play so it worked out.
This is what their first turns on the field looked like:
